Decorating sisters Nancy and Lisa team up to make local weddings more beautiful with Creative Country Designs

Interviewing Nancy Sherman & Lisa Storoschuk, Owners of Creative Country Designs

Like many sisters, Nancy Sherman and Lisa Storoschuk are near opposites - and likewise, don't always agree. But if you ask them about it, they'll admit that this is part of what makes them so good at wedding décor. It's also part of what made them so fun to interview.

The Ring sat down with Nancy and Lisa at their La Salette location to find out more about their open-book pricing, easy-to-love personalities, and of course, their full-day, stress-free wedding decorating services. Let us explain...

In the beginning...

Creative Country Designs is owned by sisters, Nancy Sherman and Lisa Storoschuk. This young company opened its Windham Road doors in 2003 with the goal of catering to events in their local community. Beginning with birthday parties and school fairs, they found themselves working with many families and members from within their area. It wasn't long before requests started to come in for wedding décor. That's why, beginning last year, Creative Country Designs began building their inventory, speaking with other expert decorators, developing their own unique spin on how to make a wedding beautiful, and ultimately, put their focus on catering to beautiful, stress-free, customized wedding decorating. As soon as they made that decision, they knew that it was the right one because things began to grow.

Since that day, décor by Creative Country Designs can be found at many of the local bridal shows and in The Ring. At the time of our fall interview, they were already booking into the next summer's wedding season.

Personally speaking...

Anyone who's ever met Nancy and Lisa knows how easy it is to lose track of time when you're talking about weddings with these two. Because they each have their own approach to each event, Nancy and Lisa know that they won't leave any stone unturned. "We each have our own ideas. Even if we disagree, we know how to meet in the middle and are able to look at every idea from every angle. Between the two of us, we’re able to give couples different ideas and suggestions. It’s truly a group effort," said Nancy.

Lisa is happiest when she's climbing a ladder to hang a ceiling treatment or creating new props for upcoming events. Nancy is happiest when she's detailing each fold of a fabric swag or chatting about weddings with brides. "Everyone knows that I'm the one who loves to talk," admits Nancy, "Especially about weddings!" Lisa wasn't about to argue.

Personally speaking, it's almost impossible not to like these two, which is why it's easy to believe that Creative Country Designs seems destined to make a refreshing, if not friendly, splash on the local wedding industry.

Customizing weddings

Nancy and Lisa are unanimous in their belief that no wedding is ever the same as another. That's why they've made it their goal to offer customizable wedding décor services to local Brantford and surrounding area brides. Their inventory is impressive, they offer detailed price lists that have nothing to hide, and they work with each couple to bring together the decorating elements that will have the biggest impact for the bride and groom within their wedding budget.

Weddings by Creative Country Designs are designed to be beautiful, but to also take a lot of the stress and worries of each little detail out of the hands of the bride and groom. "Planning a wedding can be very overwhelming and time consuming, to say the least. We want to help relieve some of this stress by taking care of those details. We want them to know that we'll be there to make sure the set-up goes off without a hitch." They will often be the ones to move flower arrangements from the ceremony location to the reception hall. They will set-up and tear-down, arrange favours on the tables that were provided by the couple, and follow up on schedules and tasks before the bride and groom do, so that it's not a worry in the eleventh hour. In fact, Nancy and Lisa have admitted to hanging out behind the scenes so that they could take a peak at the couple and the guests as they entered the room. "When they gasp at how beautiful everything is... We love it. We love that we were able to do that for them."

Before, during, and after the wedding planning stages, Nancy and Lisa are all yours. And that's the way they want it. "We love weddings and we truly have fun doing what we do. Working with brides and grooms isn't work for us. It’s very rewarding to know that we had a little part in this special day."

There's beauty in options...

Creative Country Designs has invested most of their design time and energy into building a large enough inventory to give couples great selection and customizable packages. "We have definitely gone shopping a lot!," says Lisa. They have both spent a lot of time creating props from scratch and ideas as well. "We want to make sure there are lots of choices for brides."

From their Silver Lantern centrepiece for $4 to their cake table décor for $65, the Creative Country Designs pricing brochure shows a lot to offer. This company offers backdrops made up of square columns, ceiling treatments that transform a room, ivy accents, lighting, lots and lots of fabric, arches, envelope holders, easels, cake serving sets, aisle runners, unity candle holders, pew bows, chair covers, a variety of table centrepieces, artificial flower arrangements, topiary trees, table décor and skirting, and more. They can walk you through each individual item or put together an idea for a full wedding package. "It's whatever the couple prefers. We're here for them. It's their wedding day."

Creative Country Designs can work indoors or out, for ceremonies and receptions, and at just about any locale you'd need them for.

Nancy and Lisa provide wedding decorating to the Brantford, Langton, Delhi, Simcoe, Vittoria, Norwich, Tillsonburg, Burford, Woodstock and surrounding areas. While the Belgium Hall has been a popular place for them to decorate, they are also eager to take on new locations and try out new ideas. They're happy to travel to make a wedding beautiful.

'The Favour Cake'

Keeping with their goal to stand out in a crowd, Nancy and Lisa offer what they call, 'The Favour Cake'. This is a beautiful, trendy collection of favours in sliced-cake-shaped favour boxes that are arranged in a two, three or four layered wedding favour cake. "This option is really popular and we just love getting involved in the favours." Creative Country Designs will fill each 'slice of cake' with your choice of chocolates, candies, or other favours. The pieces are also individually labeled with a phrase chosen by the bride and groom, and with ribbon that matches the colour of the bridesmaids' gowns. Sweet.

Walking you through your décor...

Hiring Nancy and Lisa begins with a phone call or an email to set-up a time to get together and talk weddings. Most often, brides come to their Windham Road, La Salette location so that samples of their designs can be seen in person. Once you're hooked on their personalities and the level of enthusiasm they have for a day that's so important to you, a wedding design can be put in place - in rough at least. "Most brides spend between $500 and $800 with us. But it can always be more or less. We're flexible and happy to be a part of the wedding day."

In other words...

"... we got married on August 26, 2006. Nancy and Lisa from Creative Country Designs were so great to work with they brought great ideas to the table and made sharing our ideas so easy to do. When I walked into our hall my mouth dropped to the floor I'm sure because the room was a dream come true. They had done everything perfect, not one detail was left out. They made a rec centre look like a ball room. Lots of guests said how beautiful everything was and I couldn't have been happier. I think the best part was they listened to our ideas not our mothers'. :) haha."

- Nicole and Josh Lightheart

Nancy and Lisa are always accessible. And, in most cases, before you have a chance to follow up on details with them, they've already called you about those details first. Lisa admits to loving the details, "That has such a huge impact on the bride who's planning her wedding... to know that they don't have to worry. We've got it covered or are already thinking of a way to do so."

Several phone calls and meetings take you up to your wedding day. If you're available, Nancy and Lisa will also meet you at the hall to walk you through your décor before the ceremony begins, just to make sure everything meets or exceeds your expectations.

When the wedding day has come and gone, Nancy and Lisa will follow up with a phone call or email. "It's a nice closure. It's our way of getting feedback from the couple and to talk about their wedding day. It also gives us the opportunity to thank them once again for letting us share a little part of their special day." From the very first phone call, to the final arrangements, a new friendship develops.

King of the castle: a family affair

Maybe it's because Nancy and Lisa obviously come from a close-knit family, or maybe it's because both are active in their local communities, but these two decorators still get quite a few requests for their family party décor services. Having children ourselves, we could easily see how popular they would be. What little girl wouldn’t dream of being a princess in her very own castle backdrop on her birthday? Although little boys prefer the Spiderman Theme, some also like the idea of being King for a day. Balloons and decorating specifically designed for kids is just another way Creative Country Designs is different.
