Wedding colours :: How dark is too dark?

QUESTION
Can I use two dark colours - Midnight Blue and Burgundy - for my wedding colours? Can I use orange, yellows, greens, etc... in the arrangements for the altars?

ANSWERED BY TEP EVENTS

C
olors can set the entire tone/theme for the day. Choose ones that reflect you and ideally ones that are in season for the time of year your wedding is.

I would advise you that if you are going to go with two darker colors that you also choose one that will really bring life to the other two and make everything pop. My worry with the dark blue and burgundy is that they may wash each other out. Choose flowers that  compliment the color scheme, for instance – if you choose a darker color, you can choose a secondary color that will highlight the darker color and brighten up the tone through the flowers!

Destined for an expensive event
QUESTION
I am planning on having a destination wedding with a reception when returning. Do you have any advice?

ANSWERED BY TEP EVENTS

Here’s a few tips to get you started…

1. Be aware that having a destination wedding and then a large reception when you get home can be an expensive route. The reception is the most expensive part of the wedding.

2. You will want to send out your invitations earlier than normal, even starting with a Save the Date will allow your

guests to book the time off work.

3. Let guests know there will be a reception when you return so that they know they will still have the opportunity to be involved.

4. You can do island weddings very simply or very involved. Many resorts offer packages and assistance but it's still important to ensure that you're on top of things (or that you have a planner that is). Numerous details that go into destination weddings (and suitcases full of fun goodies to treat your guests with).

5. A fun thing to do is create a slideshow or a video of the trip/wedding so that you can show it at your reception and allow everyone to be a part of the actual wedding.

6. Make sure you tan before you go. Wear a bathing suit that compliments the style of your dress – you don’t want tan lines in those pictures!

No cocktails for the kids

QUESTION
We aren't inviting children to our Cocktail Reception wedding. Should we invite our younger cousins to one of the Bridal showers??? I have a VERY LARGE family and had to cut down the guest list somewhere, but I still want to celebrate with them at my shower...

ANSWERED BY TEP EVENTS

Large families are always tricky – especially when you are working with a budget! You have done the right thing and cutting it off at a place that makes sense and will not ‘politically’ upset anyone.

Inviting the additional cousins to the shower is a great idea and a way to get them involved in the wedding and I am sure that they will be more

than thrilled to be a part of it! I would say – go for it.

Where do I start?

QUESTION
Lori, I am looking for a place for the ceremony and wedding but don't know where to start. I want to look at every place outdoors and indoors. Is there a listing of all the places to get married in the St. Thomas Ontario area? Also my fiancée and I are not religious but still want a beautiful ceremony. I don't know where to start with finding vows and someone to marry us if I don't want the ceremony to be religious or if it is even possible.

ANSWERED BY TEP EVENTS

The internet is probably your best source for finding the different locations that might be of interest to you!

My advice is to go and visit a ton, to get a feel for what you are looking for. In terms of your ceremony – there are plenty of officiants that are comfortable performing non-religious ceremonies and you can custom design it to suit your tastes and personalities.

Is six months too short to plan a wedding? Do you think a longer engagement period would be better? Absolutely not!

I am not going to lie to you – the less time that you have, the more stressful the planning process can be. But it can be done. There are a few items that you will need to confirm before confirming the date – venue being the number one. It is often difficult to find a venue that is available with less than a years notice. If you can find a venue – I can even plan a wedding in less than 2 months if need be! But be prepared to be buried in magazines, telephone calls and family craziness.
